Why I Wont Buy an iPad by Doctorow: Rhetorical Analysis

The purpose of the essay is to determine whether Cory Doctorow has effectively convinced his readers on why they should not buy IPad in the Why I Wont Buy an iPad (and Think You Shouldnt, Either) essay published on Boing Boing in April of 2010. This appears to be the purpose of the essay since it is reflected both in the thesis, which is placed at the end of the essays opening paragraph, and in the closing sentence of the conclusion paragraph. Furthermore, the arguments provided in the essay argue why Cory Doctorows opinion is worthy of believing and discusses the role of rhetorical tools and devices he used in the article. Thus, the essays purpose was to analyze how convincing Cory Doctorow was in delivering his idea in the particular article and reflect on his usage of rhetorical tools and personal knowledge and experience.

Such rhetorical terms as logos, pathos, and ethos are covered in the essay. In order to analyze these rhetorical terms, the author provides clear examples from the article and proves why certain parts of the article relate to one of the rhetorical terms. The author defines each of the terms by explaining what role each of the devices has overall and in the particular article. By providing an example, the author emphasizes the importance of using certain rhetorical tools in Cory Doctorows essay.

The essay has nine paragraphs, and it is well structured. It contains an introduction, conclusion, and seven body paragraphs. Each body paragraph refers to the new argument that supports the thesis statement. The essay has a formal tone, provides clear arguments, and is focused on the main idea throughout the writing. The essay also evaluates the article; it could be seen from such expressions as Doctorow has a very clear opinion of this (Jensen, 2014). The format of the essay is formal; it includes the title, reference, and heading.

Studying an example of a particular essay can help me to write one on my own since it gives an opportunity to access and evaluate how rhetorical tools affected me as a reader. For example, by reading the given essay, I could define its strong and weak sides, and in the future, implement strong techniques that I have noticed from the essay. Moreover, I can clearly see the format, style, and tone patterns by reading different essay examples, which will help me to organize my future writings.
