Why I Want to Become a Radiologic Technologist: Essay

Intelligence plus character is the goal of true education.

-Martin Luther King Jr.

I was looking at my life to date and the education I am currently receiving from Summit High School. The career that interests me most would be the medical field. I am interested in the medical field because it has always excited me to learn about different body organs. I also love working with and helping people.

The medical field covers a large area. I am interested in becoming a radiologist technician because it involves working with technology and helping people. For example, I will be working with other medical professionals and patients.

After high school, my educational goal will be to attend Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, and enroll in the (Radiologist Science BSRT program). Talking with my parents, we feel that Midwestern State University will be an excellent fit for me. The university is small, but it will allow me to receive a quality education from a state-supported university and hands-on training. The cost to attend Midwestern State University is also affordable, around $21,000 per year and $10,764 after financial aid (The College Board). Besides my education and training, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics website recommends candidates gain technical, math, and interpersonal skills (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Other skills that would be helpful are good communication, working with others, and making sound judgment decisions. Having good physical health is also recommended. It is also good to note that working in the medical field can be stressful. But, that is normal in many jobs today.

The starting salary for a radiologist technician is excellent. The average starting salary can range from $74,690 for a general hospital and around $73,370 when working in a physician’s office. For a major hospital with an outpatient care center, the starting salary can be as higher as $87,830 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Once you receive an Associate of Applied Science degree with a major in Radiologic Technology, you can start an entry-level job as a radiologic technologist. Without the degree, it can be very challenging (Parker University). Employment within the field of Radiologic Technology grew 7 percent from 2019 to 2029, faster than the average for all occupations (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). A radiologist technician is typically responsible for maintaining and operating imaging equipment and preparing patients for imaging procedures(ExploreHealthCareers.org). Other jobs that are similar to a radiologist technician are radiologist assistant, radiology nurse, radiologist (Gwynedd Mercy University). Being a radiologic technologist and working in the medical field you get radiography professionals typically enjoy additional employee benefits like health and dental insurance, paid sick leave and vacation time, and retirement savings plans (Baker College). The Other important information you should know when becoming a radiology technician you have to take an aptitude test Chambers states Most states require that a radiographer be certified or licensed. The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certifies and registers radiology technologists and administers the required exams. The exam to become certified as a radiologist tech (Chambers,796). The more am researching about becoming a radiologic technician I have to learn radiology is now the key diagnostic tool for many diseases and has an important role in monitoring treatment and predicting outcome and a number of imaging modalities in its armamentarium which have different physical principles of varying complexity The anatomical detail and sensitivity of these techniques is now of a high order and the use of imaging for ultrastructural diagnostics, nanotechnology, functional and quantitative diagnostics, and molecular medicine is steadily increasing (Austria, NCBI).
