Starbucks Ethics and Compliance Essay

Values and Beliefs

Values are what drive and motivate us to reach our goals. Everyone has different goals that we use to shape our choices, whether this be in our personal lives or at work. The values we believe in help shape our success and happiness. We are more likely to choose a company whose values match those of our own, others on value as well as the salary and benefits. Person A is a mother, who chose a part-time role and possibly isn’t interested in the highest salary or company benefits, she may consider a company that shares her values of being a working mother. Person B, also a mother however has excellent childcare facilities and takes full advantage. In order to pay for her childcare fees she might look for a higher salary but also requires the company to understand her as a working mother. Then you have Person C a single woman with no desire for children, her goal is a high-flying career. This person will favor career progression, a higher salary, and excellent benefits.

Starbucks promotes sustainability by using only ethically sourced coffees improving the lives of millions of people in the coffee communities. Responsibility by understanding the need to plant extra trees to replace ones dying from age and disease. Growth by training 200,000 farmers and giving them resources not always readily available in the poorest communities. Finally, their understanding of empowering women and girls leads to a greater impact giving them better opportunities to grow and develop.

The external environment of a business

Starbucks plan to train 200,000 farmers by the end of 2020 and plant 100 million trees within the next five years. Training extra farmers will keep their knowledge and skills up to date with the latest methods and keep more people employed. Replacing the previous trees avoids the requirement to take over already occupied forests keeping up with the sustainability of the rapid forever changing organization of coffee production and preserves the forests by recycling old unhealthy trees for renewed ones that are better for the environment and our health and provide the very best quality coffee and in turn will ensure profits are continuously met which stabilizes incomes from the coffee farmers to the baristas. By understanding the environmental needs is a business’s key to success, we all try to be more environmentally friendly now more than ever, and choosing a company that shares these values means that we are putting our profits into something sustainable and better for everyone. Environmental factors

By being ethically sourced, customers who care for the planet are more likely to want to purchase from Starbucks as opposed to other coffee chains, knowing that every care is put into the coffee right down to the bean.

Planting in their own farms by replacing dying diseased trees. They have identified key areas where it can make big impacts, by expanding on plant-based products using more reusable packaging, and looking for better ways to manage their waste.

Starbucks is helping the communities by putting providing training to thousands of farmers, giving people who possibly wouldn’t have a chance at work a chance to learn new skills and be part of one of the biggest companies in the world. They are also empowering thousands of women and children by doing so creating a greater impact on families and communities. Their efforts will give access to finance, clean water and sanitation, healthy homes, and better education which in turn creates better lives and makes people employable. (168)

Business, society, stakeholders, and ethics

Starbucks has an opportunity to lead by example, their responsibility starts with being accountable to stakeholders having focused our efforts on improving social and economic conditions for coffee farmers; minimizing their environmental impact; making a positive contribution in the communities where we do business; and providing a great work environment for their employees. The commitment to do this begins with leaders at Starbucks and extends throughout their organization. Being committed to creating a strong workplace environment is the first step. Having to continually strive to improve workplace environments and how they reward their partners by researching, planning, and developing programs, projects, and initiatives that help attract and retain top talent. Re-inventing their approach to human resources to better support Starbucks growth and business objectives upholding culture and values; and functioning in a cost-effective manner. Our efforts to create a positive workplace environment that inspires and rewards Starbucks partners include:

    • Providing benefits to eligible employees.
    • Treating employees with respect.
    • Expanding the diversity of our workforce.
    • Supporting partners in times of need.

People in business confront ethical decisions on a regular basis the quality of their decision-making has a significant impact on people inside and outside of these businesses. Many people only wish to work for employers who conform to certain ethical principles.
