Review of Andy Weir’s Book The Martian

In the book The Martian by Andy Weir, the story is told from a perspective of a person named Mark Watney and he is stranded on the planet Mars all alone. The reason he is stranded is because there was storm that made the crew decide to evacuate Mars; in the process of the evacuation Mark gets knocked out and his crew must leave without him. In the book he is grappling to survive and must figure out how to contact NASA which are the only people that could help him. Throughout the book he slowly solves problems that he is faced while trying to survive. At the end, NASA thinks of a plan that has is crew come back for him to Mars and save him and everyone is happy that all is well.

The first theme that is portrayed well in this book is to never give up. In the book Mark Watney never gave up on surviving even when he had almost no chance to survive. Like Mark Watney even when we are at our lowest (when you are going through a crucible) we should never give up and continue to do our best to survive the problem. For this theme I cited these two quotes. As stated in the book The Martian by Andy Weir on page 48. Youd think after almost killing myself twice, Id be able to stop screwing around with hydrazine. But nope. Quote number 2 from the book on page 129 stated: [11:52] WATNEY: The crops are potatoes, grown from the ones we were supposed to prepare on Thanksgiving. Theyre doing great, but the available farmland isnt enough for sustainability. Ill run out of food around Sol 900.

Another good theme from the book The Martian by Andy Weir is to be positive even in the worst situations. When Mark Watney was stranded on Mars, he always joked around even well he got in contact with NASA and the messages were going around the world he still joked around. In some cases, he was happy that somethings didnt go as planned because they eventually benefited him. Like Mark Watney in the book, we always should try to be positive in the worst situations, even if its hard to see something good in that situation. In the book The Martian by Andy Weir on page 127 states: Maybe Ill post a customer review. Brought product to surface of Mars. It stopped working. 0/10. The second quote from the book states: [11:49] JPL: What we can see of your planned cut looks good. Were assuming the other side is identical. Youre cleared to start drilling. [12:07] Watney: Thats what she said. [12:25] JPL: Seriously, Mark? Seriously?.

The genre of this book is science fiction because we cant send a living being to mars and have them stay there yet (maybe sometime in the future). Also, there is a lot of science in the book that is hard to understand at some points. The setting of this book is the year of 2035 and took place on the planet Mars.

The author made me feel like I was there by writing from a first-person point of view. An example of how I felt like I was there was when Mark was fixing the HAB (camp on Mars) and he was describing everything from a first-point of view. The main character possesses believable and realistic traits. One person thought I know like the main character is my friend Mark, he has the same characteristic he is funny. In the book Mark Watney is described as a humorous person and a person who just doesnt give up. I did like how the author used words in their book. The reason is because it is told from a 1st person point of view, there are many jokes throughout the book, and there are third-person point of view dialogue. An example from the book is when the head of staff at NASA are discussing how to save Mark from Mars in a form of dialogue. A scene that really moved me was the scene when the crew found out that Mark Watney was alive, and they accidently left him on Mars to die. The reason this scene moved me is because the crew was happy and had tears of jo except commander Lewis because she started blaming herself for him being stranded on Mars.

My opinion on the book is that I liked the book because it really grabbed my attention and made me laugh. While reading the book I was able to put a good metal picture in my head (I cant do that with most books that I read). Reading the book The Martian by Andy Weir made me a better reader because now I know there are books that are interesting to me. I just want to give gratitude to the author of book because I look forward to reading the next book.
