Supervision as Metaphor Article by Lee & Green

The issue of language has always been actual for all aspects of human life. Science and education are not an exception. That is why, there are some works which are devoted to investigation of the influence of language on different aspects of our professional development. The problem is, that in recent times the formal language of education and science has become captured into technocratic discourses of research and management (Lee & Green, 2009). The article is motivated by the authors conviction that this field is still not studied enough and their own interest to the usage of metaphor, allegory and allusion in the language of candidature and supervision.

The main idea of this work is to investigate the proliferation and intensity of the metaphor, allegory and allusion in the language of candidature. The authors come to conclusion that there is the system of metaphors and this system operates within the main discourse of supervision. Moreover, the research states the constitutive nature of metaphor. A number of key assertions of the role of metaphor in supervision are analyzed giving attention to each theoretical level.

Having analysed the work, it is possible to admit its great importance for the further investigations of this field as the authors just started exploration of this issue. Moreover, the work has a great practical importance for us as it could be used in our own investigation. Within the framework of the project Developing an institutional framework to support and improve supervision of honors and higher degree research students this information could be used to increase the level of interest to this field and create rich evidence base for students, promoting increase of results and level of knowledge.
