Role of Fencing in Shaping Identity of Ibtihaj Muhammad: Analytical Essay

Throughout Ibtihajs life the sport of fencing helped shape her identity by numerous ways and the way it helped show her identity is being her true self not letting the voice and opinions of people stop her from pursuing her lifelong goals. Muhammad, who was raised as a black Muslim American was surrounded by parents who supported and encouraged her in a respectful environment. Her parents had many expectations of her and her siblings, one of which was that they would always participate in a sport. Muhammad picked a sport that she didnt really have faith in at first but decided to give it a try a second time, finally sticking and staying with fencing a sport in which she can wear the team uniform without compromising the modest attire required of her faith but aside from that being in school was completely the opposite Muhammads surprises in schools, sports, in social situations, and competitions include moments of joy and exhilaration as well as many periods of isolation and self-doubt due to the pressure and being the only different person from her surroundings. Muhammad went through a tough journey and she pushed through it making it all the way to the top. Muhammads dedication is impressive, and the many other people who helped her along the way provided her the love and what it takes to become a champion.

Ever since Ibtihaj Muhammad took on the role of becoming a champion she also survived the name calling, and countless looks she had gotten. Despite a strict Muslim upbringing, she found out that she excelled in fencing as something she took up for a summer respite that turned into a passion that she still plays. The harsh treatment she got from some of her coaches and trainers, despite it all, she would never give up ultimately finding a new coach and practicing nonstop wherever she was welcomed and continues to try her best, competing in new tournaments with her new coach Musitilli who in her life out of all coaches really help shaped her into becoming the best she can be. He made her feel comfortable having her trust and bring out the best in her wherever she was competing. Being one of the top fencers in the world was one thing Muhammad wanted to be and Mustilli was one to help her be one of the best out of the state in New Jersey.

Muhammad has to face racism from almost everyone around her, her teammates let her skin tone affect their ideas of her skills and abilities. But being an amazing fencer Muhammad didnt let that stop her. She had to overcome hurdles in school, but she has never let the conceptions and prejudices that follow her stand in her way, and she doesnt let it affect her siblings or when she trains kids within her city. She has turned her fierce her fierce determination into a motivational aspect to inspire other that went through the same experience shes going through.
