Reader’s Reflection on Always Running by Luis J. Rodriguez

Always Running Essay

Many young kids when they are growing up they usually follow their family members’ roots. For example when you grow into a gang-affiliated family you are most likely to become a gangster then a successful person. In the book Always running by Luis J Rodriguez, family was a big impact throughout the whole book. Family structure is the biggest thing in a young persons life because it can either affect your future or help your future depending on how your family is. Family structure makes you the person you become, the way you think, and the person you will become.

I can somewhat relate to Luis because growing up I was around gang members in my neighborhood. Luis grew up in a rough neighborhood where gangs were a big thing East Los Angeles, where gangs were the only way out to many young kids growing up because they were discriminated for being Latinos. Many Latinos didnt receive much support from the community to stay away from that lifestyle. Luis wasnt really good at school as a kid. Luis always felt left out from everything. Later in the book Luis met a couple of friends who finally understood him. Luis considered them as family because they would support each other in everything. On Page 41 in the book it says A pledge to be for each other. To stand up for the clica. Three impersonations will never let you down. Luis and his friends created a gang to protect each other and to have more power over people. After everything thats happened in Luiss life, he finally found something he belongs to and has a reason to live. Luis feels like he doesnt belong at home or anywhere but in a gang with his friends, he feels like he belongs with them.

Luis was convinced the gang life was for him since his parents would always fight and he would always get beat up because he was Mexican, he wanted to feel important. On page 42 in the book, it says A gang after school showed up and started shooting up at the school and was causing destruction. Luis noticed everyone was scared of them and that influenced Luis to want to be like them and to have much more power than everyone else. Luis wants the power, hes always wanted that power. Now he finally sees what he has to do to get that power he wants. Luis started acting up in school and started causing trouble and almost got expelled from school. This connects to our time because nowadays kids want to be the most feared by everyone and they would do anything to get peoples attention. Me myself I have witnessed kids go up to kids and beat them up so people can notice them, they want to cause trouble to move in ranks and be respected by the older gang members.

In conclusion,I believe most of the situations Luis been through was because of Family Structure. He wasnt lucky enough to see people actually do good and win money the right way. Being in a gang was his destiny, he wanted to have power, he wanted to be feared and thats why at that time he made that decision to join. Family Structure plays a big role in our lives because it determines the way we do and think things, In both the book and in current time, the roles of friends and family members either help you to become a good person or it brings you down.
