Filipino Citizens Working Purposes

Many of the Filipino citizens are migrating to other country for working purposes. Working abroad may bring consequences to the children left at home. Some parents are dreaming of having a high paid job for the good of their family but they did not notice the possible outcome of being far from their children.

OFW or Overseas Filipino Worker is a Filipino living and working outside of the Philippines who are in another country for a limited and definite period (Megacitizens.com). The case of working abroad is arising. There are 6.3 million Filipinos who are temporary working abroad (as February 2014) a number that has tripled since 2011 (Megacitizens.com). This case is arising because of the issues of the employment in our country.

The absence of a parent has a big impact on growth and development of a child. It may bring negative outcome. It has effects in different aspect. It will affect the development of child-parent relationship, the state of their education psychological state and personality development. The child may experience the struggle of determining the true sense of having a family of having a parent. In this generation the presence of their parents can be felt through technology wherein they can talk and see each other. According to Reyes (n.d.), the absence of the parent is substituted trough different technological mechanism (cellphones, emails, video cams) to make their presence felt by their children even if they are thousand miles away. Unfortunately, this techy parenting will not still replace the emotional bonding that can develop in the relationship when they are physically present.

Parental involvement is a good predictor of childrens academic achievement and educational expectations during the school years. Parental absence may be linked to lower achievement and expectations through reduced parental involvement. (Wright 2010).
