Craft: Definition, Types, and Examples

Craft is a small-scale manual production based on the use of hand tools and personal skills of the employee, which allows producing high-quality, often highly artistic products. Craft has its classification, which includes paper, decorative, fashionable, functional, and other types. One of the most common types of craft is artistic craft, which is a culture that deals with the creative processing of fabrics, leather, and metal (Latilla et al., 2018). The experience was gained over the years by improving and accumulating the technique of processing materials with which the masters worked. This experience has been passed down from generation to generation.

In order to join the craft work, I painted a gouache illustration on canvas. Even though the foreground of the painting is quite dark, yet the picture has a large bright area. In this case, everyone can interpret what is depicted in their way; for example, someone can see the beach with the sea, sunset, and sky. The painting is not small, but the strokes are made with a fine brush with transitions from color to color.

One of the most attractive handicraft items from the exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was a black ceramic vessel that depicts a white antique drawing (Picture 1). This work of art is beautiful because, in addition to the fact that it looks lovely, the picture on it is a fine work, as well as a mystery to many people. The Portland vase is a relic of the antiquity era, one of the most outstanding examples of art glass products preserved today. The amphora has a dark blue layer that is applied on top of the white one, which allows to create masterpieces by cutting. Next, the blue layer is cut off so that images are formed from the peeking white layer. The amphora contains various riddles that make it an even more unique piece of craft art. This vase was broken twice, and each of them was intentional. In addition, the mysterious drawings on the vase do not leave researchers indifferent. This work was created by cutting out a picture on glass that is very difficult, so this vase is more valuable and attractive.

Sculptural craft is perfectly expressed through the work of Gian Lorenzo Bernini and is called Bacchanal (Picture 2). Children tease the Faun. The sculpture is made of marble and has many small elements, which makes this sculpture challenging to perform. The author did this work when he was very young, but it made him more famous and in demand. The result is done in the Baroque style, which was also the direction of the creators father. Lorenzo Berninis works stand out for their spatial scope, ceremonial splendor of decor, flexible dynamics of forms, bold perspective effects, and holistic synthesis of arts.

The author perfectly conveyed the image of a Faun and children, as well as small details, even though carving from marble is quite a complicated matter. Bernini saw and understood the human face as a plastic whole in constant motion. Boldly generalizing the plastic form and subtly playing with details, the sculptor sought to convey the essential features of the model, the palpability of the texture of materials. In this case, the method of carving a figure from marble was used. This is what attracts the attention of people not only interested in different types of crafts but also those who do not understand them.
