Application of the SMART Method to Achieve the Goal: Critical Essay

Goals are part of our daily work in life. They give a sense of motivation. By setting goals, we ensure their achievement. We have many personal and professional goals in our lives, and every day we strive to achieve them. Getting a degree, getting married, opening my own business – these are the general goals in my life. But how do I achieve them? I decided to use the SMART method to reach my goals. SMART is an acronym of specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bond. In this essay, I am going to describe each part of applying the SMART method to achieve my goal of completing my bachelor’s degree in four years.

  • Specific: it defined the goals. I am going to complete my undergraduate degree in business administration at the University of the People after four years to have my business, stable and secure job in the future.
  • Measurable: it determined that goal is acceptable and how far away completion is. I can get my degree by attending in five-term of an academic year and take two courses every term; after four years, I can complete my undergraduate degree. If I fail or retake two courses in an academic year, it will take more than four years to complete my undergraduate.
  • Achievable: a goal must be achievable. Attainability means toward reaching the goal you will face many challenges you must have abilities to pass through. For completing my undergraduate degree, I will face many challenges financially, emotionally, and motivationally, but I am equipped and enabled, how to fight against them.
  • Realistic: a SMART goal must be realistic and sensible. When setting a goal, your goal can be difficult but should not be impossible; realistic indicates that goal be achievable by possible sources. My goal for getting my undergraduate degree is possible, and I have available resources for completing the goal. Everyone can do it by having a hard effort.
  • Time bond: every goal should have a start and finish date. If the goal has not time-limited, you will be less of motivation and get tired. Getting my degree will take four years, started in 2020, and will finish in 2024.

Summing up, I believe that the SMART method of achieving goals is an effective mechanism that gives motivation and focuses attention on achieving the goal. It is simple to utilize anywhere, by anyone, without professional education. I wish that all of my dreams come true by using the SMART method.
